More than 60 Children Screened for Heart Abnormalities at “Check Your Beat: Kids EKG” Event in Westport

Westport, CT (February 8, 2025) – Connecticut Children’s and the Hearts in Harmony Foundation hosted a successful Check Your Beat: Kids EKG event today at the Westport Specialty Care Center. This community event raised awareness about Long QT Syndrome (LQTS), a life-threatening heart condition that affects 1 in 2,000 children, while offering free EKG screenings to more than 60 children.
LQTS disrupts the heart’s natural rhythm and electrical system and often goes undetected until a serious event occurs. Early diagnosis through simple tests like EKGs can be lifesaving. Connecticut Children’s experts provided immediate follow-up recommendations for children with abnormal results, ensuring access to next-day appointments with the health system’s cardiology team.
“Our mission is to ensure that every child has access to lifesaving care, regardless of where they live,” said Robyn Matloff, MD, MPH, Associate Vice President Ambulatory Pediatrics and Community Development. “Events like Check Your Beat not only raise awareness about heart health but also provide families with an opportunity for early detection, which is critical for preventing serious complications.”
In addition to EKG screenings, families enjoyed kid-friendly activities, a fashion show, and opportunities to meet Connecticut Children’s pediatric cardiologists and subspecialists. The event demonstrated the health system’s dedication to improving children’s health and well-being across Connecticut.
As a pediatric health system, 100% dedicated to kids, we want to emphasize that early detection and intervention can save lives. We were proud to collaborate with the Hearts in Harmony Foundation to make this event possible.

“As a mom to a child with Long QT Syndrome, I know firsthand how important early detection can be,” said Kira Greenfield, president and co-founder of Hearts in Harmony Foundation. “Our foundation’s mission is to empower families with the tools and knowledge they need to protect their children’s heart health while also raising vital funds to support research aimed at finding a cure for LQTS.”
Families whose children had abnormal EKG results expressed their gratitude for the swift follow-up care Connecticut Children’s provided. These results reinforce the importance of continuing community-based outreach efforts to bring essential health services closer to families.
