Hartford, Conn. – After a decade of transformative leadership, James E. Shmerling, DHA, FACHE, President & CEO of Connecticut Children’s, has announced his plans to retire at the end of 2025. His tenure has been marked by extraordinary growth, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to improving children’s healthcare across the state and region.

Since joining Connecticut Children’s in 2015, Shmerling has led the organization’s transformation from a standalone medical center to a leading pediatric health system spanning three states. Under his leadership, Connecticut Children’s has expanded its NICU network, formed key alliances with adult health systems, launched groundbreaking initiatives in population health, started new programs and services and significantly increased access to specialized pediatric care.

“Connecticut Children’s is stronger than ever, thanks to the dedication of our incredible team,” said Shmerling. “When I started, we needed to build scale to truly thrive, and together, we’ve done just that. As we near the completion of our Health Compass 2027 strategic plan, now is the right time to ensure a smooth transition for the organization’s future leadership and next five-year plan. This transition is bittersweet for me, but I know the children of the region now have access to the best pediatric experts in the nation.”

During Shmerling’s tenure, Connecticut Children’s has become a national leader in pediatric innovation, research, and partnerships, with Connecticut Children’s making headlines in 2021 as the first in the nation to administer the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine live on Good Morning America.

“Jim’s leadership has positioned Connecticut Children’s as a national leader in pediatric healthcare,” said Jon Rubin, Chair of the Board of Directors. “His vision, dedication, and strategic foresight have ensured that children and families across our region have access to the very best care. On behalf of the entire Board, we thank Jim for his service and commitment to our mission.”

The Connecticut Children’s Board of Directors will lead the search for the organization’s next CEO, ensuring a seamless leadership transition. Shmerling will remain engaged in his role until the end of the year to support a thoughtful and strategic handover.

“We are incredibly grateful for Jim’s contributions and look forward to celebrating his impact over the next several months,” added Rubin. “We are confident that Connecticut Children’s is well-positioned for continued success as we embark on this next chapter.”
